 Think of symbols of Italy. Pasta, chiati and Ferrari might come to mind. We can all enjoy moments of pleasant afterglow by eating and drinking Italian, but to drive Italian - at least at the icon level - seems well out of reach. But knock off some of the noughts and another quintessentially Italian way of moving from A to B hoves into view. A Fiat 500 is painfully slow, arthritic and wheezy - but it has laughter and sunshine in its personality. Like a Beetle, Mini or Deux Chevaux, a 500 squeezes cult, character and charisma into a litre sized pot, offering a classic driving experience with a difference. Every journey is memorable. In town, this tiny machine - so urban and urbane - becomes a pocket rocket, capable of pirouetting into little openings in traffic surprisingly briskly considering that power output is more suited to a moped than a motor car. The old cliche of classlessness, so often tagged to the Mini, is part of life with a Fiat 500. |
